Thank You Fans!!! $867 raised for Shutts Family... Read More on Jack's Page

PARKERSBURG, WV- It is with great sadness that a writer has to deliver bad news. It is that feeling that now consumes me as I write of our good friend and racing's good friend, Jack Shutts. Jack has been involved in dirt track racing in the Ohio Valley for nearly 40 years, as a flagman, pit steward, scorer, track photographer, writer, and many other behind-the-scenes duties. Three weeks ago Jack sat beside me at Skyline Speedway as the head scorer. Tuesday, Oct. 7 he was diagnosed with brain cancer, and the prognosis is grim. The cancer has spread to other parts of Jack's body. Saturday, Oct. 11 drivrs and fans joined Skyline's Billy Jarrell in raising $867 for the Shutts Family. Skyline Speedway and the Shutts family would like to say "Thank You" for the overwhelming help. Although the outlook is definitely not good, Jack remains positive because of his strong belief in the Lord. Over the past several years, there was not a week that passed where I did not receive some sort of devotional from Jack. On a more personal note, he always forwarded notes and messages that affirmed that you were indeed his friend. It's that friendship that we cherish. Ironically, just about a month ago Jack was estatic that former racer and friend Steve Armentrout had beaten cancer and was now cancer free. When I talked to Jack Tuesday to offer my concerns, he expressed his unselfish nature by in turn asking how my dad (who has cancer) was and how his treatments were going. Friend Steve Shaver dedicated his win to Jack Saturday at Skyline's Jack-O-Lantern 30. Shaver waved the flag high in the air and said, "This is for my friend Jack Shutts and his family," as he lowered his head as if to say a quick, silent prayer. Another good friend is Mike Balzano. Shutts always had good, interesting stories to tell of that duo, some of which came from Jack's stint as a PROS official back in the 1980's. Jack has flagged at Skyline, Hilltop, Pennsboro, West Virginia Motor, Ohio Valley, Tyler County and numerous other dirt track venues as a guest flagman. He currently is head scorer at Skyine and Tyler County. Jack has a long battle ahead, but his faith is sustaining him, just as his friendship sustained many of us in struggling times. As a writer, one thinks of things that would make good racing stories. Earlier in the year, I wanted to do a story on Jack and his family, but a new job kept me busy, and as time passed that story never developed beyond the thinking stage. I wish I had done that story. Many people knew Jack and his family for selling Mid-American auto racing news at area tracks. In fact, all of Jack's children helped earn their way to college by selling that trade paper, and youngest daughter, 16-year-old Danny (Danielle), is currently the one fans look for when they want their favorite racing paper. Jack is married to wife Billy. Together they have 3 other grown children, Mindy, Nathan and Jackie, all former sales representatives at area tracks. According to friend and colleague Steve Davis, "He is alert, and enjoys the company of visitors." Jack is in Camden Clark Hospital, Room 305-A, Parkersburg, WV. Please pass along any get-well wishes and join this author in praying for a miracle.
